Newhaven Gig Rowing Club (NGRC) are appealing for funding from the Aviva Community Fun to help aid them in continuing their mission of getting more local people out on the water. So far, NGRC has over 300 active members and goes on almost 70 rows each month, even in the winter.

Newhaven has seen a very positive change through many new schemes such as the Enterprise Zone (More Here) and the redevelopment of Railway Quay - creating a new, state of the art award winning college. The development of Newhaven is a continued process that interests the founders of the rowing club. They have already heard stories of how it has changed lives!

A Newhaven Gig Rowing Club representative writes:

"Newhaven gig rowing club is run by volunteers to get as many people as possible out on the water. Newhaven is a deprived area and we aim to bring rowing to the community. We have got lots of people out on the water so far from supporting the sea cadets and teaching them to row. Children in foster care get out on the water to the people of the community from the ages of 16 up to 72 years of age.

We are also planning on bringing people with disabilities out to row as well to help improve their mental health.

We also aim to show people that there is more you can do in a deprived area and give them a chance to do things they normally wouldn't.

At the start of the year we restarted the Cornish gig. This got a lot of interest in the club and people got to learn new skills.

With rowing it has given people the opportunity to also learn how to become a coxswain and coach for rowing.

Rowing is about getting people out in the open air, getting fitter and improving health. It's about learning new skills and trying things you wouldn't normal have the opportunity to do.

It's about being open to anyone. No barriers bared."
