Best of Newhaven 2017

Some fantastic photos were submitted as entries to Newhaven Town Council’s “Best of Newhaven 2017” photographic competition this summer.

The winners and runners up were presented with their prizes on Tuesday evening by the Mayor, Councillor June Margaret Dyer and the Young Mayor, Sophie Lewis.

Phil Sutters won the overall prize for his lovely photo of St Michael’s Church, Newhaven.  Phil was not only the overall winner of the competition, but some of his other photos were runners up in 6 different categories and he also won the Wildlife category.

More than 70 entries were submitted to the competition and the standard of photos was very high.  There were ten different categories covering different aspects of life in the town.  The panel of judges were shown numbered prints of all the photographs so they didn’t know who had taken them until the judging was finished.

13yr old Ben Harris won the Port category with a great shot of the ferry passing the breakwater, beating off some excellent competition from adult photographers.

The prize for the overall winner was £100; the winners of the 10 separate categories received £40 each; runners up in each category received £15.

The winning and runner up photographs will feature on a new set of ten lamp post banners to be installed on Riverside in the very near future.

The Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor June Dyer said “It is lovely to see so many wonderful photos showing off the best of Newhaven and letting everyone see why we are so proud of our beautiful town.”
